Question by sum142121: What are the things I need to buy to steam vegetables?
I want to start eating grilled chicken and steamed veggies.
I am not going to start grilling outside. I have a grilling pan , on which I am going to grill the chicken.
But I also want to eat the meat with some vegges . Preferably some broccilli and carrots, because I am not sure what other vegges are excellent to steam .
But what kind of a pot do I need to use to steam vegetables?
How much would it cost me?

I in fact use my rice cooker to steam things. It comes with a cool small rack business that sits in the bottom of the rice cooker pan that’s designed just for that. I reckon I got my rice cooker for 10 or 20 dollars at Wal-mart about 6 years ago.

You can use a steaming pan set or add something into an existing pot that looks like this. http://www.amazon.com/Norpro-Stainless-Steel-Expandable-Vegetable-Steamer/dp/B00004UE8F/ref=sr_1_10?ie=UTF8&s=home-garden&qid=1247696261&sr=8-10 They are only about $ 9.00.
You can steam green beans, potatoes, zucchini, yellow or other squash, cauliflower, Brussel sprouts, and asparagus. You can steam beets.
You can steam with water or mixed of broth. You can add herbs or spices to the water like dill or rosemary or sprinkled them on the veggies when done
Here is a great recipe.
Ginger and Lemon Steamed Vegetables
Ingredients
* 4 inches ginger, sliced
* 1 cup snap peas
* 1 small zucchini, sliced
* 1 carrot, thinly sliced
* 1/2 red bell pepper, sliced
* 4 white mushrooms, thinly sliced
* 1 lemon, juice and zest of
* 1/2 teaspoon coarse salt
* 1 teaspoon sesame seed
* 2 teaspoons flat leaf parsley, chopped
* 1/8 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
* 1 tablespoon olive oil
Directions
1. Lay the ginger evenly over the bottom of a steamer basket. Top with layers of the snap peas, zucchini, carrot, bell pepper and mushrooms. Sprinkle with the lemon zest.
2. Place the salt, sesame seeds, parsley and red pepper flakes in a resealable plastic bag and lightly smash the seasonings with the back of a knife until coarse; set aside.
3. Fill the steamer base with about 2 inches of cold water and add the lemon juice. Bring to a simmer, place the steamer basket on top and cover. Steam the vegetables until fork-tender; about 4 minutes.
4 Transfer the steamed vegetables to a serving platter, sprinkle with the seasoned salt and drizzle with olive oil.
This is a tasty combination of flavors. http://www.cooks.com/rec/doc/0,1950,159173-250199,00.html

Just buy a bamboo steamer. You can get them for about $ 10 – 30.
And as an added plus, you put it on top of a pot you already own.
A simple vegetable steamer is nice, but you can also achieve good results with no special equipment.
I sometimes just put veggies in the bottom of my non-stick 10″ skillet, add about 1/4 cup of water (or less), maybe a little olive oil or butter, and then cover the pan and set it over med. heat. Some veggies have more water in them, and don’t need a lot of liquid to cook.
A lot of vegetables will cook very well this way, like broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, green beans. It’s important to have them cut small enough to cook quickly. This is also how I do frozen veggies.
