Spud Gun Ignition Help?

Question by amlax11: Spud Gun Ignition Help?
I built a spud gun with a 4 inch wide barrel that is 2 feet long. the barrel is 2 inches wide and 4 feet long. I hooked up the BBQ ligniter to two screws that are about 1/2 inch apart in the barrel. when i press the button it sparks but the fluid i place in there doesnt ignite. i have tried using hairspary, & WD-40.
what other things can i place in the business that work well?
Could it be a problem that i place the ignitor in the middle of the chamber because i just watched a few more tutorials and they all place the ignitor about 2 inches from the back(where the back cap goes). i dont know how this would effect it but i was just wondering?

- put the ignitor at the back

- I’ve heard of people using Ether as it’s very volitile, propane canisters, mapp gas, etc.

Move the ignitor back to the end. The gas is heavier than air and is flowing away from the spark.

I’ve seen a rig made of heavy wall pvc pipe, ignition is done with two wire leads into the chamber and the external igniter was a stun gun. Butane was used for the fuel.
This worked very well.

Try different amounts of fuel. Hairspray is good but too much or too little and it won’t light.

make sure theres a good seal with the potato and add a little butane or propane to the mix, just enough for it to ignite and it’ll fire nice, i’ve done it and it worked :)

Use engine starter fluid — It comes in an aerosol (spray) can……

I assume you have a brain – Right????

Be aware this stuff is hazardous —- Just use a little bit…. Some brands come with a little plastic tube to direct the flow — get that one….. USE A TINY BIT – NOT A LOT!!!!!!!!!!!!

i built one a long time ago that used air. just add a reservoir tank and a valve to the back end of the barrel and use an air compressor to charge it to 130psi or more, hit the valve switch and watch the spud fly. pvc works best.
